Gothamberg: Interactive Web Art

Spring 2005 - Spring 2006

From the proposal:

Gothamberg is a place to read, interact and exchange stories of lives in apartment buildings. Together, these tales of unwanted sounds and smells, lobbies and bathrooms, laundry room gossip and unexpected favors form a single collective building. The stories describe characters immersed in social dilemmas - guilt, responsibility, legalities and banality. Voyeuristic or chance encounters are concocted from the daily habits of the story makers. Their experiences form the elliptical threads of inhabitation, a mnemonic quality expressing something of the shared nature of dwelling.

Gothamberg will exist in a multi-dimensional space. You will travel using various strategies to different parts of the structure, the stories unfolding between public, private and personal spaces. You'll be able to journey through the narratives floor by floor, person by person or theme by theme. The building will be mutable and be able to grow larger as more stories are added to it. Once the site has become fully inhabited, the occupants will elect the Coop Board which will be responsible for non-technical site maintenance.

Project participants include Marek Walczak, Martin Wattenberg, Vivan Selbo, Christiane Paul, Warren Lehrer, Johanna Kindvall and myself.

Rooter: Web-Based Compact Disc Cataloger

2005

Rooter is an open source PHP/MySQL project I designed from scratch to help those interested in organizing their CD/LP/DVD collections. Instead of keeping flat files of music on a local hard drive, one can store, view, search and edit the music collection in a MySQL database residing on a remote web server. User interaction is through a minimalist web frontend consisting of HTML forms and PHP function calls. Furthermore, Rooter's look is customizable through the included CSS document and rhymes with the word "Hooter". To see Rooter in action, take a look at my personal Rooter database here.

The official Rooter website can be found here:

PHP/MySQL Backend: alessonislearned.com

Summer 2005

My friend David Hellman, currently an art student at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), created the popular webcomic "A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible" with his friend Dale.

David was looking for ways to incorporate dynamic content into the site. In my spare time, I developed a password protected "Control Center", handling much of the site's general maintenance through PHP and a MySQL backend.

Family PC Repair Man

~1991 - Present

No doubt, some of the lowest moments in life. Sometimes it's installing drivers for a printer and removing spyware. Other times, it's reconfiguring RAID arrays. Always, it is horrible.
